Why going on an extremely low calorie diet is a recipe for failure.
When you severely limit the amount of calories you eat for any given length of time, you are causing your body to go into survival mode. The human body is designed to be self preserving. When it believes that food is scarce, it instinctively reacts to conserve its vital energy it needs for survival. Metabolism is slowed way down, and food is converted to fat and stored. The weight that is lost is from lean muscle tissue. When you go off your diet, the weight that you had dropped is put back on, and in some cases, more is gained. You do need to reduce calories but…you must reduce the percentage of total calories you get from fat.
If by eating less slows your metabolism, then eating more will speed it up. The key is to eat more of the right foods, the best foods for weight loss. Increase your intake of low calorie, low fat non starchy vegetables, fresh fruits, lean proteins, and whole grains. Specific foods that are paired together create a thermogenic effect. That is, they increase the body’s metabolism to burn off fat.
By increasing your activity level will also speed up your metabolism. You just can’t increase your metabolism by changing your eating habits alone. Weight and resistance training also need to be added to your exercise program. By building lean muscle, your body will burn more calories to maintain the added muscle mass.
