Do You Want to Lose 5 Pounds in One Week with Zero Effort?

This past holiday season, a group of fellow co-workers and myself, all men, started a contest on who could lose the most weight in 12 weeks. We started this contest two weeks before Thanksgiving. Not the best time of the year to begin a weight loss challenge. We’re obviously a bunch of guys who don’t put a lot of thought into anything that goes beyond our attention span of 5 to 10 minutes. :) But, none the less, we gave it a shot and monitored our progress once a week.

Have you heard that it is beneficial to have a partner or group that also has a weight loss goal? Believe it, it does help to motivate and encourage you to continue to strive towards your goal. To keep our group on track, we policed each others lunch choices. I came to work with an already made salad and a packet of dressing. One of my colleagues asked if it the dressing was fat free. Uh, no…but I was looking at the sodium count. “Only use half the packet!” So it is always better to have someone who looks out for your best interests.

During this challenge I was very conscious of what I chose to eat. I also noticed what my colleagues were doing. I ate more fresh fruits and vegetables and lean proteins and very little starches. I also made sure I was eating at regular intervals and at around the same time everyday. Two of my colleagues ate more often. One with more fruits and smaller portions, the other ate more lean proteins. They had slightly different results in the first week.

I lost a total of 5 1/2 ponds my first week. All I did was greatly reduce my starch intake, increased my consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables and only ate lean meats, such as chicken and ground turkey and some fish. More beans and rice dishes were added to my diet which gave the added benefit of providing a complete protein with all the essential fatty acids.

I eliminated processed foods and candies and breads. I did have only 2 servings a day of whole grains. I admit it was a struggle giving up cheesecake, but I prevailed.

Within 2 weeks I lost nine and one half pounds. I really never felt hungry. That is one of the first benefits I noticed. By eating the proper foods you get better nutritional value and fiber. Higher fiber foods take longer to digest and helps increase your metabolism, thus making you feel full longer.

So try watching what you eat for one week. Choose to eat only healthy nutritionally dense foods, lean proteins, and cut back on snacks and sweets. Five pounds to lose in one week can be done, and you can start creating healthier habits and a healthier lifestyle.
